Programs and Grants Available for Seniors in Union County
Alzheimer's / Dementia Respite Care Program and Grant Interim Healthcare has received funds through the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) for Alzheimer's Respite Care. The grant provides personal care services to support individuals with Alzheimer's or related Dementia Diagnosis.
- Eligibility is determined on a case by case basis.
- Target for services are low income & minority clients.

Adult Protective Services are those services provided to people over 60 years of age who are, or are in danger of being mistreated or neglected, are unable to protect themselves and have no one to assist them.
Services provided by Adult Protective Services include (among others): receiving reports of adult abuse, exploitation or neglect, investigating these reports, case planning, monitoring and evaluation. In addition to casework services, Adult Protection may link older adults to community resources such as meals, medical care, housing, law enforcement, emergency or other supportive services.
Anyone can report elder abuse. If you, or a senior you know, is being abused or in danger of being abused, you should report it. Some people are required by law to report elder abuse, neglect or exploitation, but anyone who believes an elder is suffering can and should report the abuse. Seniors can even report self-neglect, if they are living alone and unable to care for themselves.
To report suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation call Senior Services or Sharon at 937-644-1010 x-2232 or 1-800-248-2347. If you need to report an emergency and it is the weekend or after hours, contact your local law enforcement agency.
Angel Food Ministries The Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to provide grocery relief working through churches for their communities. The program offers a long list of groceries that varies monthly with a retail value of approximately $50 for only $25. The program is offered locally through the Marysville Christian Church located at 17000 Waldo Road in Marysville. Caregiver Grant A federally funded program which provides services, assistance and support to caregivers and their families is available through Union County Senior Services. The grant allows for services such as caregiver training and workshops, minor home repairs associated with caregiving tasks, emergency response systems, and respite services including personal care and homemaking services. Community Meal Sites Three located in the Union County Area. Community Meal Sites are a wonderful place to eat and to meet new friends for those 60 or older. Meals are prepared by Memorial Hospital of Union County and meet 1/3 of the recommended daily allowance for older adults. The actual average cost of each meal is $4.50, but meals are provided for a donation only. Suggested donation is $2.50. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday - Friday excluding holidays. Reservations should be made by 9:30 a.m. the day that you would like to attend. There are 3 meal sites in the Union County area:

Dental OPTIONS The Ohio Dental Association offers reduced rate and free dental care for clients who financially qualify. Durable Medical Equipment Bank Union County Senior Services accepts and distributes on a first-come first-served basis durable medical equipment like crutches, walkers, canes, wheelchairs, commodes, incontinence supplies, etc. If you have items in good condition that you would like to donate to an area senior or are in need of something yourself, call Union County Senior Services (937) 644-9629.
Durable Medical Equipment Bank VFW Post 332 in Marysville offers a durable medical equipment bank. You do not have to be a veteran to use this service. Call (937) 642-8205 for more information.
Emergency Beacons The Union County Sheriff?s Office offers Emergency Beacon Adaptors to Union County seniors at no cost, through their Crime Prevention grant.
This simple device is easy to install and converts your porch light bulb or visible lamp to a flashing signal perfect for Emergency Responders. The beacon is very easy to install and is activated by turning the light switch off and on twice and will remain flashing for two hours. To turn off the device, simply turn the light switch off. Emergency Cell Phones The Union County Sheriff's Office offers a program that provides emergency-only wireless telephones free of charge to Union County Seniors. The telephones can only call 9-1-1 and are to be used for an emergency situation. Contact Rod Wilson at the Sheriff?s Office (937) 645-4100 x- 4345 for more information.
Donate old cell phones to this program! There are several drop off sites around the county, including Union County Senior Services, North Union Fire Department, Richwood Library and the Union County Health Department.
Emergency Response System / Pill Dispenser Installation & 1st Month paid for by Union County Senior Services. Personal emergency response systems and timed metered pill dispensers are available through Union County Senior Services. When the care center dispatcher answers an emergency call, they have medical and emergency contact information, along with what type of alarm that was activated (was the help button pressed, did the fire detector go off, did the medication dispenser detect that a dose of medication was missed, etc). After the information is received, the unit turns on its speaker and microphone, allowing the dispatcher to ask what they can do. If help is needed, emergency contacts, or the paramedics or fire department will be called. The dispatcher also will follow up on requests to confirm that the appropriate response was made. Union County Senior Services pays for the installation and the first month of these services for Union County seniors who qualify. Free Eye Exam The Seniors EyeCare Program (SEP) is designed for people who are age 65 and older, a US citizen or legal resident, do not have eye care insurance through an HMO or the VA, and have not seen an ophthalmologist in 3 or more years. Those eligible may receive an exam and up to one year of treatment at no out-of-pocket cost. There is one doctor in Union County (Marysville) who offers this program. Farmers' Market Coupons - Healthy Senior Program Union County Senior Services provides financially eligible seniors with coupons that can be redeemed for fresh produce at participating local farm stands and Farmers' Markets. If you are a Union County Senior age 60+ with a current gross monthly income of no more than $1,670 single ($2,245 couple), you qualify. Eligible seniors will receive $20/single or $30/couple per month. Coupons will be distributed beginning July 1st and will continue through September. UCATS offers transportation for those seniors who do not drive. This program is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here for an application
Food Stamps The Food Stamp Program also know as the Ohio Direction Card helps people with low incomes obtain nutritious food. Food stamps are issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through Human Services departments and are used to purchase specific staples and grocery items at participating grocery stores. Eligibility, determined by the CDJFS, is based on federal guidelines including income, resources and household size. Food Stamp benefits are issued by use of a Smart Card called the "Ohio Direction Card". This program is available through the Union County Department of Job and Family Services call (937) 644-1010. Furnace Cleaning & Tuning – Project Safe Heat Union County Senior Services is pleased to announce that it has awarded a grant to the Community Action Organization of Union County to provide funding for persons 60 or older to have their gas / propane / fuel oil furnace cleaned and tuned and to receive a carbon monoxide detector. Columbus State! As a community service, Columbus State offers seniors who are 60 years old or older and fully retired, the opportunity to enroll in credit courses tuition-free on a space-available basis. To register for credit courses applicable to an Associates Degree, seniors pay an application fee of $10 , course lab fees and the cost of books.
Senior are also admitted to special courses on a tuition-free, space-available basis once the course is financially self-supporting. Lab fees, books and instructional supplies are assessed to seniors as required by other students, and courtesy parking permits are provided at no cost.

Grocery Shopping for Homebound Seniors Union County Senior Services offers a grocery shopping service for homebound Union County seniors. Appointments are available from 8-4p.m. Monday -Thursday and must be made at least 48 hours in advance. Cash of no more than $50 and checks will be accepted at the following locations: Kroger, Community Market, Wal-Mart, and Richwood Cardinal Market. Be prepared to provide a detailed list of shopping items. If paying by check, seniors will be asked to sign the check and provide their ID for the shopper to take with them. Heat Relief - Air Conditioners for Seniors Union County Senior Services offers a program through
Community Action Organization June 1st - August 31st that provides window air conditioning units at no charge to seniors age 60 and over who can provide documentation from a medical professional requesting it for a current condition. Call Community Action (937) 642-4986 for an application and more information on this program and other programs that help lower-income seniors with energy costs.
Heat Relief - Fan Program The Union County Senior Services' Fan Program can provide a fan for Union County Residents age 60 and older whose monthly income is less than $1,603/mo single and $2,158/mo for a household of two. No doctors excuse is required. Call

Home Energy Assistance Program HEAP Program Qualification Income Levels Raised! You may now be eligible for help with your heating bills -even if you haven?t qualified in years past... If you live alone and your annual income is less than $17,150 you now qualify. Two person household limits are now $23,100. Union County Senior Services is able to help with the application process at no cost. Home Repairs Grants and 0% or 1% Interest Loans for Homeowners who qualify.
Grants and very low interest loans are available to help repair homes owned by qualifying seniors in Union County. Money can be used for home repairs such as roof, furnace, plumbing, septic, structure or electrical. Rural area grants are also available to repair or remodel a house in order to make it accessible and useable for persons with disabilities.
The eligibility requirement in the city of Marysville is an annual income of less than $36,050 for single occupancy and $41,200 for a 2-person household. The eligibility requirement for the rural areas of Union County is an annual income of less than $38,300 for single occupancy and $43,800 for a 2-person household. Home Repair Program/Housing Trust Fund Program This program provides minor home repair/maintenance services to qualified senior homeowners. Priority is given to repairs that focus on health and safety. Services may include: wheelchair ramps, plumbing, electrical repairs, roof repair/replacement and heating unit repair/replacement. This program is linked to other CAO and local programs in an effort to maximize funding efficiency and service provision.

Kitty Connection The Union County Humane Society's Kitty Connection is just for seniors who cannot drive or who would find it difficult to transport a cat to its medical appointments. Volunteers will match seniors with a kitty who is in need of a home and will make regular visits to answer questions and provide assistance if needed. Basic medical attention that can be provided at the Humane Society will be at no charge to the senior. Cats must be kept indoors at all times. Call (937) 642-0487 to meet your new best friend!
Legal Assistance The Legal Aid Society offers free legal advise to Union County Seniors 60 and over regardless of income or assets. Make an appointment to meet with a paralegal to discuss legal issues such as living wills, survivorship deeds, predatory lending, family law issues and simple wills and more by calling (888) 301-2411.
Legal Assistance Telephone Pro Seniors is a group out of Cincinnati that has a grant for providing all Ohioans over 60 with free legal service, regardless of income. Telephone appointments for the legal hotline can be made Monday?Friday from 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. An intake worker will ask for basic information and have a hotline attorney call you. The attorney hotline frequently deals with legal issues concerning consumer issues, Medicare, Medicaid, Medicaid estate recovery, social security, living wills, durable power attorney for health care, protective services, etc. If your legal problem cannot be solved over the phone, they can refer you to an appropriate source for further assistance. The Pro Seniors legal hotline can be reached toll-free by calling 1-800-488-6070.
Library Material Delivery Outreach The Marysville Public Library has an outreach program for home-bound seniors in Union County. If you know a bookworm or a senior who would be interested in books on tape or other materials offered by the library, call Patty O?Conner with Adult Services (937) 642-1876 x-32.
Medicaid assistance is handled through the Union County Department of Job & Family Services. Medicaid provides comprehensive, quality health care coverage to lower income Union County families. The three primary markets are:
· Children to age 19 whose families fall within income guidelines (Healthy Start, Ohio's Title XIX Medicaid and Title XXI Children's Health Insurance program)
· Adults participating in Ohio Works First, pregnant women and some working adults with limited income.
· Persons who are 65 or older, blind or have disabilities.
Disability Assistance is available for qualified disabled Ohioans through a state-funded (non-Medicaid) program administered by the ODHS Office of Medicaid.
The Office of Medicaid maintains a web site at www.state.oh.us/odhs that fully describes the Medicaid program, eligibility guidelines, health benefit plans and covered services. It also provides statistical reports and other data.
The Office of Medicaid also operates a toll free Consumer Hotline that can provide general Medicaid information, assist with application for Healthy Start Coverage and facilitate enrollment into managed care plans. The Consumer Hotline number is 1-800-324-8680, or TDD 1-800-292-2572.
Mobile Meals Memorial Meals meals are planned by a registered dietitian and prepared in Memorial Hospital?s Food and Nutrition Services kitchen. Once you?re part of our Mobile Meals program, you?all also be visited by a registered nurse who will evaluate your health to ensure that your needs are being met through the program. Meal recipients are encouraged to donate whatever they can afford toward the cost of the program. The approximate average cost of each meal is $4.50. A Supplemental Meals program that offers the same services as Mobile Meals is available to people under the age of 60.

PASSPORT (Pre-Admission Screening System Providing Options & Resources Today) is Ohio's home and community based Medicaid-waiver program for older adults. To be eligible for this program you must be 60 years of age or older and need help with activities of daily living such as bathing and getting in and out of bed. Services available include homemaking services, transportation, personal care services, home-delivered meals, emergency response systems, adult daycare services, and case management. To be eligible, your income must be below $1,869 dollars per month and have no more than $1,500 dollars in assets. However, if you make more than this you can still receive services, but may be required to pay for portion of your care. This goal of this program is to help seniors who would otherwise be confined to a nursing home remain in the comfort of their own home. Personal Care - Title III Grant Interim HealthCare holds the Title III personal care and homemaking services grant distributed by the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA). This grant is part of the Older Americans Act and Senior Community Block Grants providing personal care & homemaking services including bathing, dressing, restorative exercises & many related activities.

Prescription Drug Assistance Program Union County Senior Services Prescription Assistance Program has been established to help meet the rising demands of prescription drug costs for Union County Seniors age 60 and over who do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare Extra Help, but who are unable to afford the prescription drugs they need. In addition to this program, Union County Senior Services will work with seniors to explore a variety of other programs that are available to help them with their prescription drug costs. Project Lifesaver The Union County Sheriff's Office offers a tracking system that has had tremendous results nationwide locating residents who wander because of Alzheimer's, Down syndrome, Autism or other related disorders. Participants are fitted with a bracelet, which in actuality is a battery-operated radio wrist transmitter emitting an automatic tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Senior Watch Program The Union County Sheriff?s Office currently offers two programs that help safeguard the independent lifestyle of the older adults in our county.
Senior Watch Call Program? A computer will call your home daily at a prearranged time with a pre-recorded message. If you do not answer the call, the computer will call back in 20 minutes. If there is still no answer, your chosen ?keyholder? will be contacted and will be asked to check on you. If the ?keyholder?? is unable to be reached, paramedics and law enforcement officers will be dispatched to your home.
Participants must notify the Communication Center when they anticipate that they will not be home for the call.
Senior Watch Deputy Visit?A Deputy will periodically stop by to check on the program participant. The visits will be brief. Deputies will declare their presence by announcing that they are just ?stopping by?.

Telephone Bill Discounts The Lifeline Ohio Program offers discounts for lower income seniors on their telephone bills. Single households whose annual gross income is below $13,965 and married households with incomes below $18,735 should apply. Transportation Service UCATS The Union County Agency Transportation Service (UCATS) provides transportation to and from medical appointments for any Union County Senior who does not drive. YMCA Senior Sunrise Program Free admission for Seniors - Every Friday 9:00-noon. Join other Union County Seniors at the Union County Family YMCA in Marysville for coffee, snacks, and games. Stay to use the wonderful facilities at the Y like the arthritic pool and fitness equipment for free! Senior Services is cooperating with the local Y to promote healthy senior living. Every Friday morning, the Union County Family YMCA welcomes county seniors with free admission and coffee from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Please check in at the front desk.
